For a while, whenever I flew, I typically would pack a bag I would have to check in. Never knowing how I might feel from day to day, I’d pack an outfit, shoes and accessories to fit any occasion. I would end up having to check my bag at the counter because it was too heavy to carry on the plane. The problem I found was that packing this way was causing a delay in me getting to my destination. Not only I would have to wait for my bag in baggage claim after my flight but I also ran the risk of my bag getting lost in the process. So I decided going forward to pack light enough for a carry on. That way I won’t have to deal with the extra headache that comes with going through an airport.
The fact is, carrying around too much weight will slow you down.
I must admit, I’ve been guilty at times of trying to handle everything on my own. Eventually I realized that the more I tried to handle by myself, the worse I felt. Some people may look at needing help as being weak, however, I’ve learned it’s the contrary. Reaching out for help when the load gets too heavy shows strength and confidence by putting your pride aside. Not only was my load lighten after letting others help, but my situation got better. Here I was making things harder on myself trying to carry weight that was too heavy for me.
Isn’t that what we do too often?
“I’ve got it. No thanks, I don’t need any help. I’m okay.” All the while you are barely surviving. Instead of seeking help, are you packing more and more on yourself? It was a difficult lesson for me to learn but it is okay not to be okay sometimes. We are not super humans no matter how hard we’d like to try. God said it is not good for man to be alone. That also means that people need other people. We are not built to do life by ourselves. God provided us with a community of people, whether family, friends or mentors, that are here to lighten our load when it gets too heavy.
Jesus, Himself is willing to trade our heavy load for one that is much lighter. It is not to say that the journey won’t be painful or uncomfortable, but it will be bearable. “How do I do that?” you may ask. You do it by being honest with God about what hurts you or what you can’t handle alone. There is no need in putting up a facade as if you have it under control because He knows exactly where you are. God will not impose Himself on you if you do not want His help.
So ask Him.
If you are behind on your mortgage, ask God for wisdom so you will know what to do. Are you still carrying around the heartache from the divorce you suffered through? Look to the Lord to heal your heart and help it to beat again. The rape or molestation that has you tied to shame; God wants to exchange it for His peace and release you from that bondage. Does parenting a troubled child keep you from being your best for your other children? Give that weight to the Lord in exchange for His strength. Maybe you are struggling with your identity and knowing who you are. Trade in that confusion for the truth in God’s word.
Sometimes God is trying to lose you from some dead weight in your life, but you are holding on to it out of fear. Let it go! Let Him lighten your load. Your destination has already been set before you were even a thought. How soon you will arrive, depends on the part you play in handling life’s obstacles. So shed the unnecessary baggage and learn to pack light.
In Relentless Pursuit,
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”” -Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
