Accepting What You Can't Change
Death is so final. It is painful and can seem never ending. It doesn’t discriminate and there is no way to get around it. At some point and time, we all must experience it. Sometimes we are aware of the end and other times we are knocked off our feet from being blind sided. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure, it is hard to get over. So how do you get to the point of accepting what you can’t change?
To be honest, during a time of excruciating pain, praying is not the first thing on your mind. Sometimes the pain is too much to bear that you can’t even find the words to pray. When you have to deal with the passing of a loved one, the end of a dream, an irreconcilable marriage, or a friendship that you have outgrown, it is devastating on different levels. Who puts time and effort into a relationship just for it to fail? Why would you love someone with all you have knowing that one day they would have to leave this earth? So needless to say, death hurts. When something is over that is near and dear to your heart, it is hard to accept in your own strength.
So try God.
The bible says that God gives power to the faint and increases their strength. It is through His Word that we gain this power. This does not happen over night, but in time we become stronger. We can’t successfully get through difficult times without God. When you try, you have no peace because you are spending your time and effort trying to deal with it yourself. God doesn’t want us to worry but to pray about everything. Even when we can’t muster up the energy, just call on the name of Jesus. He knows whats on your heart when you can’t seem to find the words. Having done through difficulties in my life, I have had to lean on God to get me through. A prayer that I found helpful and still refer to until this day, is the Serenity Prayer. It simply states:
“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.”
So I encourage you to take it day by day. This is a journey, not a race. Whatever it is you may be going through that is hard for you to accept, surrender it to God in prayer. In due time, you will gain the peace that surpasses all understanding.
In Relentless Pursuit,
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 NLT
